 | Q1. How do I join (subscribe)? |
 | A1. To join,* add yourself to our e-mail list, simply go to our
Join
page, enter your e-mail address into the form and click the 'Join'
button. You will be taken to our e-mail list service, fill out our
join form there to subscribe. No password is
needed. You will receive a welcome notice confirmation to your e-mail
address. Please subscribe using only one e-mail address.
You must join to receive our group e-mail, this e-mail is never sent
unsolicited.
When you join, you are joining a professional
independent user group private volunteer membership association.
You help us serve you, our members, by your
answers to the sign up survey questions. The limited survey demographic information captured
at the time a member joins may be used for our group, in order to
develop content tailored to our members.
If you
live outside the greater Denver, Colorado (USA), metropolitan area or the
Colorado front range of the Rocky Mountains, please see the
FAQ below.

Only adults may join -- minors are
not eligible to join or participate in any activity of this user group

|
| |
 | Q2. How do I "unjoin"
(unsubscribe)? |
 | A2. To "unjoin" (unsubscribe), remove yourself from our
list, simply respond directly to any e-mail sent to you from us, via
our e-mail list service, by
clicking the link at the bottom of the e-mail message you received. You will be taken
directly to your record at our e-mail list service, click to
unsubscribe from the list, and submit. No
password is needed. You will receive immediate
confirmation.
Each e-mail sent using this list will be
clearly identified as being from our group, via our e-mail list
service. For the exact name of our e-mail
list service provider, see Join. |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q3. How do I change my e-mail
address? |
 | A3. To change your e-mail address, simply
respond directly to any e-mail sent to you from us, via our e-mail list
service, by
clicking the link at the bottom of the e-mail message you received. You will be taken
directly to your record at our e-mail list service, change your e-mail
address, and click to submit. No
password is needed. You will receive immediate confirmation.
Each e-mail sent using this list will be
clearly identified as being from our group, via our e-mail list
service. For the exact name of our e-mail
list service provider, see Join.
You may also change your e-mail address by
unsubscribing (see FAQ Join Q2, above), then joining again with your new
e-mail address (see FAQ Join Q1, above). This avoids unnecessary
bounced messages.
If you do not have an old e-mail message from
us to use to respond and change your e-mail address, then simply join again
with your new e-mail address. If your e-mail address is active and you
want to change to a different e-mail address for our messages, follow
either of the two methods above to change your e-mail address. Please
subscribe using only one e-mail address.
When e-mail is
returned from your inactive e-mail address, you will be automatically
removed from our e-mail list by our e-mail list service! The group does NOT take action notification of
your bounced e-mail due to an inactive e-mail address. In that case, you will need to join again to
continue on our list.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q4. I am no longer receiving the
group e-mail messages, have I been dropped from the group e-mail list? |
 | A4. Probably, yes. Once you are on the list you
will likely stay on the list until you remove yourself from the list
or your e-mail address becomes unusable.
When e-mail is
returned from your inactive e-mail address, you will be automatically
removed from our e-mail list by our e-mail list service! The group
does NOT take action notification of
your bounced e-mail due to an inactive e-mail address. In that case, you will need to join again to
continue on our list.
You may also be removed from the group e-mail
list when the answers to the sign up survey questions are invalid or
you sign up from an area outside of our user group location. If you
have inadvertently provided invalid answers to these questions, you
will need to update your answers to continue on our list. If you have
already been removed from the list, you will need to join again.
Also see FAQ Join Q8.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q5. How
do I update answers to my personal sign up survey questions? |

up survey questions that you completed when you joined, simply respond
directly to any e-mail sent to you from us, via our e-mail list service, by
clicking the link at the bottom of the e-mail message you received. You will be taken
directly to your record at our e-mail list service, update your
answers (Update Preferences),
and click to submit. No
password is needed! You will receive immediate
confirmation.
Each e-mail sent using this list will be
clearly identified as being from our group, via our e-mail list
service. For the exact name of our e-mail
list service provider, see
FAQ Join Q8.
You may also be removed from the group e-mail
list when the answers to the sign up survey questions are invalid or you
sign up from an area outside of our user group location. If you
have inadvertently provided invalid answers to these questions, you
will need to update your answers to continue on our list. If you have
already been removed from the list, you will need to join again.
Important security note: If you forward to someone else your e-mail from our group,
you will also be forwarding to someone else the ability to review or
update your personal sign up survey questions! To avoid that possibility,
delete the link at the bottom of the e-mail message you are forwarding -
before you forward your message! This is your responsibility.

|
| |
 | Q6. Previous to June, 2007, I received the
old ListBuilder e-mail
announcements from the group, do I need to join (subscribe) again, to the new
group e-mail list? |
 | A6. At that time, you did not need to do
anything. Our old e-mail list was moved to the new e-mail list service.
You did not need to unsubscribe from the old list, nor did you need to
subscribe to the new list. All those on the old list as of June 1, 2007,
were moved to the new list.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q7. I deleted my e-mail announcements from
the group, can I obtain them again?
Can I view past e-mail messages? |
 | A7. Yes, selected e-mail messages sent are
available. See Messages to view the list
of archive e-mail messages. You do not need to be on our e-mail list
to read these messages. Some messages, like meeting reminders, are not
archived.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q8. I don't want spam! Once on the list, can
anyone send me e-mail? How can I recognize e-mail from this group? Are
there any advertisements in the group e-mails? What use is the
survey demographic data completed at sign up? |
 | A8. This list has been set up so that members
on the list can not send e-mail to other members on the list, nor can
they see the list or any information about others on the list. Only
the list owner, the group, can send e-mails to members on the list. This restriction
is in accordance with our group policy and helps keep you from being a
likely spam target. This list can not
be propagated to other lists by anyone. This list is never allowed to
be given to anyone, including advertisers, or our Presentation Meeting
or Lab sponsors, host sponsors, presenters, etc. This has always been our
group policy.
Also, just as before, only e-mail
announcements concerning our group events and activities for which our members might
participate, and other related information, will be mailed to you from
this list. This other related information may include: notices from
other user groups, notices from Microsoft, notices from other
companies, etc. Each e-mail sent using this list will be clearly
identified as being from our group, via our e-mail list service. For
the exact name of our e-mail list
service provider, see Join.
Our e-mail list service is a fee paid service,
it is not free to this group. Members who subscribe are not charged by
the e-mail list service provider. Members who subscribe are not
charged by this group. This service is free to all of our members. The
annual fee is paid by the leader of this group (see Contacts).
The leader receives generous donations from our members to reimburse
the fee for this service. Thank you, members, for your donations!
You will see an identification note from
the e-mail list service company on each e-mail message and on our subscription
form at our e-mail list service.
That name will clearly identify them as our e-mail list
service by name.
Our e-mail list service will NOT add any lines of advertisements for
other companies (except for themselves) on e-mails sent from our
group, nor on the e-mail list sign up form for our group. The e-mail
list service may display other company ads on their own company web site pages,
but not on those web site pages that are used by our group members. Other companies do not have access to our group list
nor to any specific or general member information. Advertisements or
identification of sponsors of this group may be included in messages
from this group.
The limited survey demographic information captured
at the time a member joins may be used for our group, in order to
develop content tailored to our members.
E-mail to you from our group may appear
From:
<our group or a person in our group>
To: <your e-mail address> <your name may also
appear>
If
you use a spam filter and you are not receiving our messages, contact
the group for the specific e-mail
address that you can use in your filter to always
accept our e-mails, see Contacts. Plus, note that we can not respond to spam alert
procedures that require a manual intervention for you to receive our
e-mails. Also see FAQ Join
Q4.

 | Q9. What is the difference between the
different topics: Visual Basic, Visual C#, and .NET? |
 | A9. The extensive enhancements that have been made to the
major development tools that we use make up the most recent version of
Microsoft Visual Studio, these development tools are known
collectively as the .NET. It will no longer include what have been called
"language islands". The Visual Studio Common Language Runtime
makes development "language-neutral". Now there is much
more that is common than different between the languages.
Our group will embrace all aspects of the .NET development platform as a whole.
We will concentrate on those developers
who choose Visual Basic and Visual C# as the languages with which to code.
These are emphasized in both our Presentation Meetings and Labs.
Visual C# is of particular interest to
C++ and Java developers. See About.

|
| |
 | Q11. I
live outside the Denver, Colorado (USA), metropolitan area and the
Colorado front range of the Rocky Mountains, should I
join? |
 | A11. If you
live outside the greater Denver, Colorado (USA), metropolitan area or
the Colorado front range of the Rocky Mountains, and do not intend to
participate in our events, there is NO reason to join or to remain a
member, instead, you may check this web site at any time for information
about our group. Our members include application development professionals from the greater Denver,
Colorado (USA), metropolitan area and the Colorado front range of the
Rocky Mountains. Since we are a participatory member
lead group, active physical participation is needed at our
Presentation Meetings, Labs, and other group activities.
You must
join in order to register for each Presentation Meeting and to be notified
of our events. When you join, you subscribe to our group e-mail list. You
will receive periodic e-mail announcements from our group. You will be
reminded of our current monthly activities for both our Presentation
Meetings and our Labs, plus any other programs, activities, and events in
which we are involved. These activities will center around the greater
Denver, Colorado (USA), metropolitan area
and the Colorado front range of the Rocky Mountains.
We encourage you to join and actively
participate in your own local user groups.

Register and Attend
|
| |
 | Q1. Why do I have to register to attend the
Presentation Meetings? How do I register? |
 | A1. You don't need to register for most of our
meetings! For some, sorry, you must register to attend those
Presentation Meetings. NOTE: When you need to register, we will
clearly announce it both on this web site and in the e-mail message(s)
that precede that meeting; otherwise you do not have to register! When
it is required, this is a requirement of the building in which
we meet, in order to limit the number of attendees to the fire code
maximum. Once the limit has been reached, we will be unable to
accommodate additional attendees. We have been very close to or at our maximum
size, so please register to attend. We will also use those numbers to
plan for refreshments and door prizes that will be available from time to time. In
addition, we will also use these numbers to determine the level of
interest with specific topics. The following notes are only applicable
when registration is required.
When required, please register online and as soon as
you can after seeing each Presentation Meeting posted for registration online. See
our Home Page for the exact dates
we meet. All Microsoft events use the same
registration process.
When required, you may also telephone to register toll free: 1-877-MSEVENT, available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Have your event code handy, it is the number just prior to the
".htm" in the URL file name (see the links in Current Events), for example: 109237837.
To search for other Microsoft events, see
Microsoft
Events and Webcasts.
When required, during registration online, you may be
redirected to add your name and e-mail address to the Microsoft events web
site system on your first visit. After you add yourself to that system,
registering for our events or any Microsoft events will be fast and easy.
When required, during registration online, you may see a
message such as "The event you are searching for is not
available for registration." This indicates that you can not
register for the event. This usually means that the room has reached
the maximum seating capacity available. You may check back later (for
possible cancellations or changes in room location) or you may attempt
to call to register.
When required, you might also receive that message when you
register too late. You
should register prior to the date of each Presentation
Meeting. This is a requirement of the Microsoft events
registration process.
When required, you may attend
without registering, only when space is available, at the start
of the Presentation Meeting! Since some people register and do not
attend, you may find that you can still attend, even when you have not
registered, although space is not guaranteed.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q2. Do I have to register to attend the Labs? |
 | A2. No, there is no registration to attend the
Labs.
Remember, our Lab space is limited. Spaces are filled on a first come
basis, may be shared, and not guaranteed -- come early!
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q3. What is the difference between joining and registering? |
 | A3. You join once, but register for each
Presentation Meeting when required (see
above). There is no
registration for the Labs. Registration is separate from joining the
group. You don't need to register for most of our meetings!
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q4. Where do I find the schedule
of Presentation Meetings and topics and register to attend? |
 | A4. When Presentation Meetings have been
posted for registration online, you may register to attend that
Presentation Meeting. Check our Current Events for
the most up to date exact dates of our Presentation Meetings
and to register, plus Join to get e-mail
notices. For examples of past Presentation Meeting topics, see Past
Meetings. Also, check our Meetings page.
You don't need to register for most of our meetings! |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q5. Where do I find the schedule
of Labs and topics? |
 | A5. When Labs have been
posted for review online, you may review the topics in order to decide
to attend that Lab. Check our Current Events for
the most up to date exact dates of our Labs, plus Join to get e-mail
notices. For examples of past Lab topics, see Past
Labs. Also, check our Labs page.
 |
|
| |
|
| |
 | Q6. Why have I
had trouble getting into the Presentation Meeting building? |
 | A6. The
building in which we meet for our Presentation meetings has security.
The doors and elevators (but not the garage) are closed and locked at 6:00 p.m.
each weekday. Our meetings begin at 6:00 p.m., so if you arrive on
time or early you should not have a problem getting inside or using
the elevators or the garage.
There has been increased security in the building and a more
stringent adherence to the building security policies. Microsoft does
not own the building nor control its security, it is a tenant along
with many other tenants and our group is provided space, the use of
their equipment, and access to their property. We must be mindful of
other tenants in the building and their security requirements, as well
as the security of those other tenants and their employees working
during the time of our meetings. We all need to endure some additional
minor inconveniences for the cause of security. One might also be
grateful for the diligent use of security while one is inside the
building.
Each month special
precautions are taken to provide for our specific needs in order to
allow our entry into the building until at least 7:00 p.m., to give
our members a larger window in which to arrive, providing supervised
access to the building, elevators, and garage. We cannot guarantee
that our specific access will always be honored. If needed, the group
may have to enforce the start time to coincide with the building
security restrictions and therefore not provide specialized access to
those who cannot arrive on time. If you do not feel safe coming to our
meetings, do not come, your determination to come is your decision.
Again, our meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. - arrive before then and you
should not have a problem getting inside. You are also missing
valuable sessions of the meetings when you arrive late.

| |
 | Q7. How do I qualify
for a chance to win a door prize? Are there obligations? |
 | A7. Often, Microsoft, meeting sponsors,
group sponsors, presenters, members, guests, friends, and others provide
valuable door prizes to be awarded during our presentation meetings.
To win any of our door prizes offered during a presentation meeting, follow
these complete door prize requirements and details:
+ Enter with a business card at the beginning of the meeting.
+ Include your name and current e-mail address on your entry.
+ Only one entry per person per meeting allowed.
+ Door prizes may be awarded at any time during the meeting.
+ Door prizes announced are subject to change, may not be available, and may
be substituted at the total discretion of the user group.
+ You must be present to win!
+ You may not assign your award to someone else if you win and you are not
present.
+ Winners agree to the use of their name and e-mail address regarding door
prizes.
+ You must be a member of our group by
joining our "Denver Visual Studio User Group" e-mail list, found at
Join.
+ You must be registered for the meeting, when registration is required
for that meeting (you don't need to register for most of our meetings,
see
Messages).
+
You agree to send a business-like thank you by e-mail to
your door prize
provider (you will be given the name and e-mail address to send your
thank you). Accepting a door prize obligates each winner to
send a thank you note to their door prize provider.
Previous
winners who have not sent their thank you note are not eligible to
win again!
+
When you have received a book FREE from this user group and
specifically entered into an agreement to follow the How to Review process
in exchange for a book review by an offer from this user group
under our feature
,
You are NOT eligible to receive door prizes
from this user group when you
have failed to follow the How to Review process.
See
How to Review
- Warning Notice.
It is our group's custom
for door prize winners to send a personal individual but business-like thank you
e-mail
note to the provider of
each door prize won. It is also our group's custom that the note indicates
how much the winner appreciates the support
of our group
by the door prize provider, including the door prize.
Winners should ensure that they obtain the name and the e-mail address of
their door prize donor.
See Past Meetings Messages to view past
door prizes.
There are generally no obligations
(other than the required thank you note) required
of the winners of our door prizes; however, winners should always ask
before selecting a specific door prize. For book, software, or some other
door prizes, you may be asked and should expect to help your fellow group
members by writing a review of the item. Some restrictions may apply to
some door prizes. Some door prizes may not be transferable. Some door
prizes may include an expiration date. The providers
or suppliers of door prizes may place additional restrictions on door prizes.
You are responsible to determine if you are
eligible to receive door prizes when you are restricted by your company
or government affiliation. The group will not provide
documentation on the value (if any) for any door prize.

Build your own online
network through LinkedIn.
Every person you connect with builds value for you and all your connections
(optional):
- LinkedIn is a
business-oriented
social network service largely geared towards professional adults with "real world" relationships
- your network.
- Make
LinkedIn work for You -- For active professionals, having an online presence
is now a necessity. Build your own online presence through LinkedIn. As a
social networking media web site, LinkedIn provides you a professional
location to host your resume and your compelling profile. Then you can go
beyond developing your profile to actively building a quality network. Focus
on quality, not quantity. Help yourself and others -- the network you build
contains you and is also an integral part of the network that others share
with you. Keep it professional and avoid those traps that are
unprofessional.
- LinkedIn helps you...
-- Establish your professional profile online and maintain your presence
-- Network with colleagues, friends, and your fellow professional user
group members
-- Find experts, ideas, opportunities, and job and career advancement
- In addition to networking with your "real world"
professional relationships, LinkedIn also provides a way to meet, network, and
associate yourself with other members individually and in Groups. Groups exist
within the
common "network" structure in LinkedIn, enabling people with certain
interests to share information with others who share their interests, but
may not be closely connected to them through other relationships. Our Denver
Visual Studio User Group has created such a Group within LinkedIn
categorized as a Professional Group. The Jobs portion of our Group is only
one part of the larger features available in LinkedIn
- you are encouraged to explore all the features of LinkedIn.
LinkedIn offers many features for you personally as well as
providing our Group with a robust and easy to use area for
reading and posting Jobs.
- LinkedIn is FREE to use. LinkedIn is an independent company and
not affiliated with Microsoft nor is it operated by our Denver Visual
Studio User Group. LinkedIn uses paid advertising. Optional fee paid Jobs are available
and are not part of our free Group Jobs. Our Group uses the LinkedIn free services with LinkedIn arranged advertising,
for which our Group receives no compensation.
